Challenge:  Little in your education has prepared you for the analytic work that’s now part of your core responsibilities. Books and professional development courses you’ve reviewed are long on process, short on methods.

Solution:  We’re prepared to help your district answer the call to “data-driven decision making” with a series of three-hour workshops designed to elevate the analytic skills of your team members. We’ve developed a sequence of lessons that apply statistical methods to real-world K12 challenges, and help you draw sound conclusions.

Method and length of workshops: Each three-hour workshop offers a combination of listening, working with teams on analytic exercises, and presenting findings. Participants will learn by doing, and will leave with a better command of fundamental skills, and an appreciation for the range of skills that are required of analysts in other fields. Our methods are designed to stimulate self-appraisal and curiosity.

Learning objectives: : (1) Gain familiarity with new visual vocabulary and concepts; (2) learn how to use the Planning Explorer and the Assessment Explorer; (3) recognize uncertainty and estimate the degree to which measurement error should limit your confidence in your inferences; (4) discover how and why to incorporate comparative evidence into your decisions; and (5) explore how to effectively frame, analyze and measure achievement gaps.

Who would benefit:   Relevant to anyone who works with data about staff, students, financials, achievement or other outcome data. LCAP planning team members and assessment teams are certain to find this workshop relevant.

Prequisites:  None.

Presenters: Two presenters will lead each workshop. Michael O’Neill is our director of professional development. Mary Perry is an experienced workshop leader and formerly adjunct faculty in the Ed.D program in educational leadership at San Francisco State University. Steve Rees is a 20-year veteran of K12 data analysis, and president and founder of School Wise Press.

Cost: The cost of a three-hour workshop is included in the annual licensing fee for the Planning Explorer. A one-hour workshop is included in the annual licensing fee for the Assessment Explorer. To request workshops separate from these analytic support services, please call for a quote.

Analytical Support Course

Pat Puleo leads elementary school principals in a workshop at Newport-Mesa USD in August 2013. The workshop brought new evidence to the table to help principals negotiate annual plans with their director of elementary education.

Problem: Analytic competency begins with data literacy. But scholars Ellen Mandinach and Edith Gummer have found that data literacy is not taught in schools of education, and is for the most part missing in action in districts and schools. Fields outside education are developing courses, credentials and programs fostering data science skills at a furious pace. Where can working educators turn to develop these skills?

Solution: We are developing a course designed to develop professional level competencies in data analysis for K12 leadership.

Launch date: We anticipate a spring 2017 debut.

Method and length of course: We will combine conventional lectures with hands-on exercises and lab workshops. There will be required readings and a capstone project. Twelve two-hour units make up the course. These can be scheduled in successive weeks over a three month period. Alternately, they can be scheduled as six visits of four hours each, scheduled every two weeks.

Who would benefit:   Recommended for directors or assistant superintendents in the fields of curriculum and instruction, education services, human relations, finance, assessment and evaluation, as well as site leadership.

What would they earn on completion:  Educational credit units from an affiliated college or university.  Certificate of completion will be granted as well.

Prequisites:  Commitment to complete course work, readings and assignments. Mastery of the equivalent of ninth grade math skills.

Curriculum: After our curriculum development team reviewed more than 30 texts in the field, we started writing our own curriculum with the guidance of an advisor, Peder Jones, whose company won awards of excellence for the textbooks they developed.

Cost: $2,400 per person. Classes to include a minimum of 12 participants and a maximum of 18.
