Ask an Expert: Jim Cox and Pat Puleo
Private schools are just thatprivate. That means there's no rating system that compares them. Comparing private and public schools using test scores doesn't work either, because private schools aren't held to the same testing regulations. Public schools must administer the same tests to all students. Private schools can choose what tests to give, which students to test, and whether to test at all. You can, however, find out a lot about public schools on our Web site. Go to the "Compare Schools" button on the left side of the home page. Most important, remember that test scores alone should never be your sole criterion for selecting a school, public or private. I recommend making an appointment to meet with each school's principal. Visit the sites and observe classes. Ask about the academic programs, afterschool programs, and opportunities for parental involvement. Ask what each staff considers its areas of strength. Every school's programs and support systems differ, so you're looking for the best match for your child. An awareness of the California Content Standards will be helpful as you ask about academic programs. Go to California Department of Education web site and click on "State Board of Education," then on "K-12 Content Standards." Ask the different principals how they ensure that their staff teaches to these standards. As for transferring to another public school district, all districts have individual policies. Ask at your district office about requesting an interdistrict transfer for schools outside your district, or an intradistrict transfer for a school within your district. Note that in both cases, you will be responsible for transportation. TOP OF PAGE | BACK TO ARCHIVE INDEX © Copyright 2003, Publishing 20/20. All rights reserved. |
