Measuring Up: A Parent's Guide to Testing, Grades, and Assessments

What is the difference is between a high school that rates 880 versus another school that rates 818? Obviously higher should mean better, but what do these ratings really signify?

The numbers you cite are the Academic Performance Index, or API, scores. They're computed by using the school's aggregate scores on the SAT-9 tests, as well as the state's language arts content standards test (that alone counts for more in the API than anything else).

To best answer your question, we can tell you that the absolute maximum score would be 1000—but this perfect score would be practically impossible to accomplish. All the students at the school would have to achieve a ranking from the 80th to 99th percentile in all the subtests for the school to achieve the highest API score. The state has set the bar at 800 as a good goal for all schools. It's a lofty goal but, as you see, there are schools that make it.

The upshot is that you're looking at two very high-scoring schools. The best way to choose between them is to find the one that best matches the needs and interests of your own child. Visit the schools, talk to the principals, observe the teachers and students in action, ask to see some of the work students are expected to produce. Ask about student support programs and extracurricular activities. In the end, these factors will all prove more important than the relatively small difference between their API scores.
