Ask an Expert: Jim Cox and Pat Puleo My son attended a private school which gave Stanford achievement test series, ninth edition for elementary grades. Is this the same test that the public schools refer to as SAT-9 or STAR scores? And what are the subtests that were given to public schools? The SAT-9 version that was given at your school was most likely the S version. The public schools give the T version which is security-protected version for the public schools testing program. There are many similarities, but it is not the same test. The subjects tested in elementary and middle school are reading, language, math and spelling. In high school, spelling is dropped, and science and social studies are added. Most significant is that public schools are required by law to test all students. That includes limited English proficient students and special education kids. There are few private schools whose populations include these youngsters and when they do, they are a much smaller percentage of the overall school population. For this reason, a public-private school comparison will not be very accurate. Comparing school scores with these different variables would be like comparing apples and oranges.
