Measuring Up: A Parent's Guide to Testing, Grades, and Assessments

I am concerned because our district is ending social promotion. I'm not sure whether my daughter will test high enough on the SAT-9 to get promoted to sixth grade.

We understand your concern over social promotion. Each district has established its own criteria for identifying which students might be held back. Those criteria will explain which tests are to be used, and how much weight each carries in deciding if your child is "at risk of retention."

If you received a notice that your child is "at risk of retention," you should also have received the school's plan to help her catch up. Be aware that the law says that parents should be notified "as early as possible" if their child is at risk of being held back. In brief, they need to let you know early so they have time to really invest in your child's success. Frankly, the school has to make an effort to improve her skills by working with her on her areas of weakness. At the end of the school year, your daughter's teacher will determine whether she will be retained.
