APPEALING A POSSIBLY UNDESERVED BAD GRADE

I wanted to review my son's files because he received a C in biology when we both thought he deserved a B. I thought the teacher might have added some comments that explained the grade, but he didn't. How do I appeal?

Grades can be changed only by the teacher or your local school board, except where it can be proven that there has been a clerical or mechanical error, the grade was given in bad faith, or the teacher is incompetent. Before any grade can be changed, the teacher must have an opportunity to explain — orally and/or in writing — why the grade was given. The teacher must also be included in all discussions related to the grade.

Ask the records custodian to schedule a meeting with the teacher, you, and your son. If you are unable to change the teacher's mind, schedule a second meeting with the three of you and the principal. If you are still dissatisfied, you may want to appeal to the school board. In the meantime, ask that the school include a full explanation of your concerns in your child's file.
