EXCESSIVE SUSPENSIONS

There is one English teacher in our school who always sends my daughter to the principal's office. The assistant principal has been very sympathetic and usually finds some work for Maria. While I appreciate what he's doing, I'm sure my daughter could benefit from attending English class — if not this class, then another. What can I do?

You and Maria need to come to an understanding with her teacher. If it appears that they will never be able to work together, request that the school transfer Maria to another class. It sounds as though the assistant principal would be willing to help.

Suspensions by a teacher from her class are not restricted to the 20-day limit imposed on suspensions from school. However, like other suspensions, they require a suspension conference with the student and parent. These conferences may occur after the suspension has taken place.
