Using California School Law To Advocate For Your Kids

NEW VS. OLD MATH

My daughter is in the fourth grade and she still doesn't know her multiplication tables. Most of her other classmates don't either. Who decided that 10-year-olds don't need to learn their times tables?

The math framework, published by the state, is very clear: fourth graders should know their times tables and be able to demonstrate proficiency in a number of computational skills. Your school or district should have a copy of the Department of Education's Math Framework, or you could order a copy from Sacramento (800 995-4099). Be sure to request the 1998 edition which reflects the board's 1997 decision on math standards and instructional methods. After you have reviewed and talked with other parents, ask the principal to schedule a parent's meeting to review the curriculum. Because math has been such a contenious issue, some schools schedule parent "math nights" where teachers explain the curriculum and conduct demonstration lessons. These sessions help anxious parents support their child's learning, by modeling appropriate questions and providing strategies for parents to help with their child's homework.

You're clearly not the only parent who's hopped up about math. Even school board meetings on the math curriculum can turn into shouting matches. "Theory is fine, but what about the times tables?" demanded the Palo Alto middle school parents who in support of basic computational skills. "Rote memorization is the surest way to kill any interest in the beauty of math. Math should develop the child's ability to problem-solve, to use reason and logic," retorted the supporters of more concept-based math. The Palo Alto dispute can be heard in districts throughout the state and country, as anger that curriculum innovations that promise so much seem to leave their children behind. Incidentally, the new math standards emphasize basic computational skills.
